Much can be said about Pharaoh's heart hardening and being heartened and the implications for free will... but today, I'm interested in what the hardening of the heart actually meant in itself. For the ancients, the heart was the seat of knowledge and skill, as well as emotions. So hardening that emotional and thinking place was like bringing a wall down on compassion and love... as well, possibly, as shutting down rationality or self consciousness. Looking at the other place that hardening the heart arises in the Torah can help us understand this even more...
