6th night of Chanukah - Part of Kehillat Nashira's 8 nights of Chanukah series for 2024
As we light the 6th candle tonight, we're delighted to share a video of Yolande Pieters lighting the Chanukah candles and treating us to some beautiful singing. Yolande’s voice is well-known and loved at Kehillat Nashira, and her singing adds warmth and light to our celebration.

But that's not all! To add a unique flavour to the evening, Yolande brings us a taste of her South African heritage with a recipe for Vetkoek—a savoury fried dough treat that pairs perfectly with a mince filling or lentils for a vegetarian option. In her own words:
“Most traditional Afrikaans food is preserved or dried, like biltong, fried or very sweet, for example koeksisters, which are fried dough soaked in a gingery sweet syrup. It's a legacy from the 'Great Trek' or Exodus from the British colonised Cape up to the north - apologies for the history lesson and enjoy Chanukah! The mince filling can be replaced with lentils and the vetkoek can be eaten without a filling as well."
