Parsha Vayetze - video sermon

Writer's picture: Kehillat NashiraKehillat Nashira

This week Rabbi Miriam's video sermon is live from Frankfurt, Germany.

"Hello from Frankfurt! Being in the home city of my great grandparents, Else and Hugo (the original Hugo for anyone who knows my family) is a strange experience. Frankfurt was home for them, and they pursued safety at the expense of home, leaving for England in 1932. Without this perceptive decision, I wouldn't be here.

In Vayetze, our ancestor Jacob, the home-loving dweller of tents, also leaves home. He is only described as building a home in next week's parasha (Genesis 33.17) when he has returned back to Canaan, his homeland. But he does have a house during his time as a refugee, and that is Beit Elokim - the house of God.

For all those refugees who have had to leave their homes to this day, I hope they too are able to find Beit Elokim - an intangible place to call home."
