Succot - video sermon

Sukkot, particularly in these cold climes, has always been about feeling the fragility of the bricks and mortar we usually shelter in. When we get outside in the autumn, we really feel the exposure. This year, I'm not sure we need to feel that. Our safe structures have been well and truly challenged.

Rabbi Alan Lew said it so well: a sukkah:

"exposes the idea of a house as an illusion. The idea of a house is that it gives us security, shelter, haven from the storm. But no house can really offer us this. No building of wood and stone can ever afford us protection from the disorder that is always lurking all around us."

So here's another image for Sukkot 5785 - that of the "sukkah of peace". God's protective yet permeable bubble of protection that we long for each evening in Maariv as the night rolls in.

Please Hashem, may we be able to dwell in the sukkah of peace this chag.
